Most diners would be upset when restaurants implement surcharges without their knowledge. But a restaurant group with multiple area locations has been adding $1 per check to customer bills for a month – for a good cause.

Wynne, co-founder of the Dallas-based Eight-O Management, operating Flying Fish, Rodeo Goat and Flying Saucer restaurants in Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee.

“Is it a perfect method? No, but I didn’t want to have to ask each party for a donation either,” Wynne said. “It takes time and puts people on the spot. I made the decision to take the initiative and I think it’s the right move.”The company has already donated $100,000 and will continue the initiative until it reaches $250,000. According to Wynne the company is “seeing an overwhelmingly positive reaction.
