The U.S. Department of Education has canceled a $3.3 million grant that was funding 14 teaching positions at the Academies of Anchorage, according to Anchorage School District Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The U.S. Department of Education has canceled a $3.3 million grant that was funding 14 teaching positions at the Academies of Anchorage. According to a letter from the Department of Education, the grant was awarded to the Anchorage School District under the Fostering Diverse Schools Demonstration Grants program, established during the Biden Administration.

The current Administration has determined not to continue that program and the funds are now reserved for the School-Based Mental Health program. “Therefore, the Department will not be making continuation awards to grantees in the Fostering Diverse Schools program,” the letter stated.District Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt addressed the grant cancellation on Tuesday night during the School Board meeting. He said he was notified of the grant cancellation only hours before the meeting. Bryantt said he and the school district are already working on a solution for them by using holdback positions to fund the teachers themselves. The other eight positions impacted are Academy Coaches, certified teaching positions that were not in the classroom. Bryantt said they are currently discussing what will happen to these teachers. The school district does plan to appeal the decision and Bryantt said he’s in contact with legislators. However, Bryantt wanted to confirm to families at this moment, Academies of Anchorage will not be severely impacted. “The classroom will not be impacted, the personal finance course will not be impacted.
