Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and a General Support Aviation Battalion to the U.S.-Mexico border. This move comes with the aim of strengthening security measures along the southern border. The Defense Department has confirmed that approximately 3,000 troops will be involved in this deployment, increasing the total number of military personnel stationed at the border to 9,000.
General Gregory Guillot, commander of United States Northern Command, stated that these deployments will enhance the existing efforts to curb the flow of illegal migration and drugs across the southern border. He emphasized the added agility and capabilities that the troops will bring to the mission. According to United States Northern Command, around 2,400 of the deployed troops will be utilized for various support roles, including detection and monitoring, administrative support, transportation support, warehousing and logistics support, vehicle maintenance, and engineering support. An additional 500 soldiers will focus on facilitating the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies, as well as providing aerial medical evacuation capabilities. The duration of the deployment remains unclear, and officials have not disclosed the specific locations along the border where the troops will be stationed. The Defense Department issued a statement on Saturday, asserting that these deployments demonstrate the department's unwavering commitment to collaborating with the Department of Homeland Security in securing the southern border and upholding the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States under President Trump's leadership. However, it is important to note that under U.S. law, troops are prohibited from directly engaging in law enforcement activities at the border. Both the outgoing Biden administration and the new Trump administration have reported a decline in border crossings in recent months
