3.0 earthquake breaks beneath seafloor west of San Diego but doesn't cause major shaking [Breaking]
occurred off the southern tip of San Clemente Island, west-northwest of San Diego, at 7:42 p.m. on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.
The temblor happened 6.2 miles beneath the seafloor, in the vicinity of the San Clemente fault zone, the agency said. It did not cause widespread shaking along the San Diego County coastline. Seismologists say that it’s not unusual for such quakes to occur offshore. The seafloor west of San Diego is lined with a variety of fault zones, some which have produced notable quakes over the years.
