Spenard 2nd Saturday is a recurring community event that strives to celebrate local businesses, champion creatives and give back to the Anchorage community, said Sirsha McPeek, the event’s coordinator.
Tammy Philemonof holds an article of clothing and shows it to Lindsey Philemonof as they shop at Rage City Vintage during the store’s grand opening in Spenard on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022.
Co-coordinator Sirsha McPeek hopes the event will help shift Spenard’s negative reputation and show the neighborhood’s vibrancy to locals.–– one in October and one in November –– alongside fellow volunteers Carrie Shepherd and Helena Sarcone. Each quarter, a local nonprofit is chosen to receive the proceeds from Spenard-themed, limited-edition collectable stickers sold in conjunction with the event. This quarter’s designated nonprofit is the Children’s Lunchbox, a program through Bean’s Cafe that provides pantry boxes to children and families.
