Texas GOP urges Trump administration to recalibrate tactics after a protester was killed, reigniting gun rights concerns.
Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. Greg Abbott were among several who suggested the Trump administration change tactics to build trust. After another shooting by immigration officers in Minnesota, some Texas Republicans urge the Trump administration to change tactics and try to de-escalate the unfolding situation there.
NBC 5’s Phil Prazan has details that continue to play out. The Trump administration continues to debate how to change its immigration enforcement efforts after ICE officers shot and killed another person in Minnesota. Some Texas Republicans say they should change tactics. Texas Republicans were quick to defend the Second Amendment rights of the protester who was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minnesota.Former Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, R - Beaumont, wrote in part,"…abandoning constitutional principles when politically convenient is just as dangerous. Rights are neither casual nor partisan.”, “I understand the emotion, frustration, etc., of this debate locally and nationally. But we must not allow that to cloud our positions or weaken our fundamental constitutional rights.”: “You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines, to any type of protest that you want. It’s that simple.” Alex Pretti had a license to carry a gun, and so far, no video or evidence has shown that he was the aggressor."They, being the White House, need to recalibrate on what needs to be done to make sure that that respect is going to be re-instilled," said Abbott on the Mark Davis Show on 660am The Answer, Dallas conservative talk radio. “To ensure that they get back to what they wanted to do to begin with, and that is to remove people from the country who are here illegally, who are allowed in by Joe Biden, especially those who pose the most danger, and to go about their job in a more structured way," said Abbott. Senator Ted Cruz, on his podcast, criticized the Minnesota governor and Minneapolis mayor for not working with ICE, but called on the Trump administration to calm down with accusations before the facts come out. “That immediately when an incident like this happens, they come out guns blazing, saying we took out a violent terrorist, hooray," he said,"Escalating the rhetoric doesn't help, and it actually loses credibility.” “What I want to call on everyone to do is just ratchet things down. Ratchet the rhetoric down," Cruz said on his podcast, the Verdict with Ted Cruz, "I would encourage the administration to be more measured, to recognize the tragedy, and to say we don't want anyone’s lives to be lost. The politicians who are pouring gasoline onto this fire need to stop.” While most Texas Republicans support President Trump’s deportation efforts, they’re calling for a calmer and less chaotic process.
