The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced the recall of thousands of pounds of ground beef.
The bacteria E. coli is capable of causing hemorrhagic diarrhea and kidney failure, particularly in children younger than five, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
People with HUS will likely be hospitalized because the condition can cause other serious and ongoing problems such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, brain damage, and neurologic problems. The agency wrote:"FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."
