'It was the creepiest thing that's ever happened to me.'
,"What's the creepiest thing that has happened to you when you were completely alone?" Let me preface this by saying, DO NOT READ THIS BEFORE BED IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP!!! These stories gave me chills. You've been warned!"When I was probably 14 or 15, I was downstairs in the basement getting ready to do some laundry.
My parents' basement is unfinished, and even as a young kid, it always gave me the creeps, so I was already feeling on edge. I heard the house phone ring upstairs, which made me jump, but I laughed it off. It rang once more, and suddenly I heard pounding on the floor upstairs. It literally sounded like somebody was getting off the couch in the living room and rushing to the phone. The phone kept ringing, and the pounding footsteps on the floor kept happening. I was frozen still until the answering machine finally picked up and the footsteps stopped. I grabbed a hammer from my dad's toolbox and crept upstairs, where there was obviously nothing. Made the executive decision to say fuck the laundry until either my mom or dad got home.""I was home alone and suddenly started hearing whispering like super audible whispering that sounded like a group of people progressively leaned in closer and closer to my ear while whispering aggressively. My cats reacted to it as well. It was creepy as hell.""I was home alone in my room with the door closed and heard someone say my name. I assumed it was my mom back from the mall, so I raised my voice a little and said out loud, 'What?' No response, and I didn't hear anything else, so I went back to reading. A few minutes later, someone repeated my name, a little louder, so I yelled out, 'What?' a little louder. I didn't get any response, so I thought, whatever, they'll get me if they need me. The third time I heard my name, the person shouted it, and they sounded angry. I was annoyed, so I got up, opened my door, and yelled out, 'WHAT!' But the house was empty." "I checked all the rooms and all the closets and checked outside, but literally nobody was there. When my family got back from the mall, I asked if they had come home and then left again, and I just didn't notice. My sister said no, they had been at the mall for the whole two hours. My name also isn't a basic name that can be confused for any other sound, so I know I heard my name loud and clear.""I woke up at like 4 or 5 a.m. to the sound of someone very loudly banging on the door. It scared my cat, too. I went to check, and there was nobody there. I looked around to see if someone had taken off, but there was no sign of anyone. It had snowed, and there were no footprints or tire tracks indicating that anyone had been here.""When I was 13 or 14, in my bedroom, up late at night reading one of the recently releasedbooks. I was lying on my stomach with my knees bent, and I felt a hand trap my heel. It scared the shit out of me, and then I realized it felt familiar. It was the same way my great-grandfather would grab my foot to let me know he was walking past me. But he had died five years earlier. I would also occasionally hear cowboy boots walk down the hallway in the middle of the night, and I wore cowboy boots for as long as I knew him. I felt like it was his way to tell me that he was still close and watching over me." "When I was 16 and living with my grandparents, I was awoken in the middle of the night by a bright light coming in my second-story windows. There was no noise or wind, and I remember thinking that it didn't make sense for a light to be there because of how close the trees behind us were, and why would a helicopter be shining in my window? I lay there for a few moments, then saw a dark figure in the corner of my room. It was dark, medium height, with a large head and thin limbs. I studied the figure for a moment, it moved, and then I jumped out of bed and ran through my bathroom that connected to the laundry room and down the hallway into my grandparents' bedroom. I slept on their floor for maybe two weeks.""I was the first one to come into the office. Picked up the phone to make a call . No dial tone — that alone was unsettling. Then, I heard a raspy voice say, 'Heeelllllllp.' I slammed the phone down in pure terror. Picked it right back up to check my sanity and just heard a dial tone. My only logical explanation is that I happened to pick up before it rang. Our number was sort of similar to the hospital's, so we occasionally got wrong numbers. Maybe someone was calling the hospital, and I just happened to pick it up at the perfect time before it rang? But what are the chances? No one else was in the office; nothing like this ever happened there again. It was the creepiest thing that's ever happened to me. I just hope it wasn't some poor guy's last attempt to call the hospital, and all he did was get my terrified hang up…""I heard a lot of weird shit in the house I grew up in — mostly just footsteps, but sometimes voices. The creepiest one was when I was waiting up for my parents to get home from an office party, and I heard the back door open. At the same time, I heard the door open, and my dog got up and trotted downstairs to see who was there. I heard two women talking, and I was confused because I didn't know why my mother would've brought someone home with her. Then my dog started losing his shit and barking his head off, and when I ran downstairs, there was nothing there." "I feel oddly compelled to mention there was another incident where I heard a woman screaming at the top of her lungs in the basement. That time, I had a friend with me. We were doing our makeup in the bathroom. She screamed her head off, so I know she heard it too, and we both heard footsteps coming up the stairs. She locked us in the bathroom and refused to open the door until my mother got home. Apparently, telling her not to worry because stuff like that happened all the time wasn't very reassuring.""I was working a night shift at a nursing home and had the floor alone, all the residents asleep in their rooms. I was in the kitchen washing up and thought I heard someone running and laughing. I checked, but no one was there. Then the automatic soap dispenser started going off a ton!!! Even though I wasn't near it. I was so creeped out, man. This convinced me of paranormal stuff.""I was the executor of my MIL's estate. I was in town to clear out her house to sell. I went into the basement to start clearing it out. When I finished, it was around 10 p.m. I had to pull a chain to shut off the basement light and then run up the stairs in the dark. Just as I pulled the chain, something called out my name. I screamed bloody murder and ran up the stairs as fast as I could. I locked the basement door and left the house. I don't know what it was. It was a male voice. I refused to work into the night after that and refused to go into the basement. Several odd things happened while I was there, but I chose to ignore them until that instance.""I heard whispers coming from my wardrobe in the middle of the night. I checked it, and no one was there, but there was a doll I bought years ago from Turkey, among random clothes and accessories. I had never had any issues with it before, but I can't help thinking it was coming from that. After that, it happened a few more times, and once I asked whatever it was out loud to stop and go away, it never happened again.""I just recently moved out of a very old rental. I was aware of a murder that happened in 2021 in one of the basement bedrooms AFTER I moved in, but I wasn't about to move again because of money, so I rode out the lease. I was always on edge in the house, but nothing ever happened. I had everything out except for a few things in the storage room under the stairs in the basement. I was standing there taking a breather because I'm fat. I was standing in front of the storage area, and both bedrooms were directly to my left. My dog upstairs starts growling and barking at the top of the stairs, then I hear a very loud sound like fingers snapping, then a loud whistle from one of the bedrooms, and I nearly shit my pants. I stood there frozen while my dog came down the stairs and ran into the room. No windows were open or anything." "I eventually went into the room, assuming some dickhead was inside that wasn't supposed to be there, and nobody was there. I left the rest of my stuff in the storage room, took my dog, and left. Sent the landlord an apology text and said the keys were in the mailbox.""This actually happened not too long ago, but I was sleeping or close to sleeping in my bedroom, and suddenly I heard very loud, fast footsteps get closer to me, and it sounded like someone was running down wooden stairs into my apartment. It was very loud, like stomping . It literally sounded like it was through the wall beside me. It scared the shit out of me, and my heart was pounding. I grabbed my knife, and I was convinced for like a week that my upstairs neighbour had a secret staircase into my apartment.""Not sure if this counts, but I once sleepwalked through my bedroom window. While it was closed. I woke up outside trying to climb down onto the ground — only the ground floor, but still. I sometimes still sleepwalk, but never that badly.""Around 2 a.m., I heard my locked bedroom door handle slowly turn while I was completely alone. I stared at it, frozen, until it stopped.""I was walking down my hallway, and my wallet came flying from behind me to the wall in front of me. Nobody was in the house. I still can't explain it.""Childhood home. I was sleeping and woke up with severe pain. It felt like both sides of my head were being squeezed. I opened my eyes and looked to my right, and there was a shadow figure standing in front of my alarm clock. My alarm clock was very bright and had multi-colored numbers. The light was outlining the figure, and I couldn't see my alarm clock. I ran out so fast, and as soon as I left my room, my headache went away. Definitely slept on the couch that night. Well, I was lying awake for hours until I finally passed out.""I was at my parents' house when they were vacationing in another country. In the middle of the night, while I was playing a relaxing video game, I heard my dad scream my name like he was in pain.""I had lived in my flat for about two years already, when one day, I heard rapid thumping noises from the attic space, like someone/something heavy was crawling around. Both my two cats and I looked up simultaneously , and after that, they were as restless as I was. The thing was, three days prior, our mailman had told me the girl/lady who used to live here had gone missing, and that all the neighbors knew it . I'd initially ignored it, then got an exterminator to check for rodents, but nothing was found. The creepy thing is, it only happened once.""I was home by myself and was going to pull out my suit to get ready for an event that night. My suit jacket and matching pants should have been on a hanger in my closet. My jacket was there, but the pants were missing. I checked my pants drawer, and they were not there. I checked my brother's room, and they were not there. I went to the basement laundry room, and they were not there either. I went back upstairs to my room to find my underwear drawer pulled up with my dress pants folded neatly on top. Freaked out, I went to turn on my TV just to have a distraction, but I got nothing but static. I looked behind the TV, and the cable was disconnected. I always wondered what it would be like if I had a security camera in the room. Would the pants just materialize? Where were my pants while I was looking all over my room?""I woke up in the middle of the night for no reason. The apartment felt off. Too quiet. Too still. When I walked into the living room, my front door was wide open. Not cracked. Wide open. I always lock it. I remember turning the deadbolt. I remember checking it. Nothing was missing. Nothing looked touched. I closed it, locked it again, and didn't sleep for the rest of the night. I still don't know how it happened.""I was sitting in my living room watching YouTube videos on my TV, and then a book, that had been securely sitting on a bookshelf next to my TV, seemed just to fly off the bookshelf and crash to the floor. This happened recently, and I have no clue how the book fell off the bookshelf. I don't believe in ghosts, but it sure looked like the book was pushed off the shelf. Even now, after I've returned the book to its place on the shelf, I still can't figure out how the book did what it did. There has to be a rational explanation, but I don't know what it is.""I left the kitchen to go use the bathroom, came back into the kitchen two minutes later, and all the cabinets and drawers were open. No one was in the house with me , and the doors were locked.""We used to live in the countryside on a farm. It was winter, and there was snow on the ground, and we noticed footprints around our house one morning, next to the windows, as if someone had been looking in our house.""I saw a shadow person in my closet when I was a kid. It was an old farmhouse, and my room was the only one with a closet because that was where the attic access was. It didn't have a door, so it was a gaping dark hole in the room at night. One night, I was not sleeping and was in my bed, playing quietly, when I looked up and saw a man-shaped shadow with red eyes. It was darker than the darkness of the closet so that I could see its perfect outline. I ran for my life when it put its hand on the wall as if it was looking for the light switch." "The call lights in the assisted living facility I worked in used to go off in empty rooms sometimes. They were the old-fashioned kind with a string that had to be physically pulled to activate. Then, they had to be flipped up by one of us to turn them back off. It was especially fun on the second floor, which was only used for storage, because you'd be going into a dark room full of covered furniture and other odd shapes to flip the switch. Also, once I was sitting at home playing a game on my PC while waiting for the time to get my husband from work. We were newlyweds with one car, and he worked second shift. My cat was lying on the desk, suddenly fuzzed up, and ran off as something spooked him right about the time I got the feeling someone was staring intently over my shoulder. It was so eerie that I got up and left the house way too early. Whatever it was, it definitely was not friendly.""I was home with my dog, and we heard the garage door opening. I thought it was my husband coming home from work. I called out, 'Hello?' from upstairs and heard my husband say, 'Hey, it's me.' My dog and I waited for him to come upstairs, but he didn't. We went downstairs to check, and no one was there. The app for our garage door said it had been closed all day. I called my husband, and he was an hour away at work. I still tell this story all the time because it thoroughly creeped me out.""I'm in my late 30s, so back in the day, I had earphones that had little black foam covers. I kept losing the foam thingies in my bed. One day, I was home alone. I was going through all my blankets trying to find the foam thing. Someone knocked on my door , and when I turned around, the foam was literally falling from the air. There was no furniture anywhere close, and I hadn't been moving the blankets hard enough for it to fly across the room all the way to the doorway. It seemed like a polite ghost, so I just said thank you and tried to keep it cool, but I was really creeped out."And:"My office is in a building that used to be a mental asylum many years ago. It's part of a big complex. People have always said it's haunted. I'm usually the last one to leave. The ghosts regularly mess around in the cubicle diagonal from mine. They play with the adjustable height desk and the drawers in the cabinet. Multiple times a week. I make a point to say hello and good night."What's the creepiest thing that's ever happened to you while you were home alone? Tell us in the comments or share anonymously using this form.
