A 26-year-old man, who had drank excessive amounts of water, has died at Santa Rita Jail, the fifth in-custody death this year and the 67th since 2014.
The man, who has yet to be identified, died April 27. His family lives in Mexico and his next of kin have not yet been located.
When a deputy checked on him at 3:25 p.m., he was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. But Modeste said, "despite his admitted drug use, there was no cause for concern found during the medical and mental health intake process."
