$25M Lilly Endowment grant to fund trails, bike lanes in Indy's under-served communities

Noblesville has applied for a state grant to fund most of its section of the Nickel Plate trail, while Fishers and Indianapolis are pushing forward with their own plans.From Haughville to the far east side, under-served communities in Indianapolis will soon see $25 million of new walking and bicycling infrastructure.

awarded the funds to the Central Indiana Community Foundation's Connected Communities initiative, which aims to improve connectivity in historically under-invested areas with higher concentrations of people with disabilities, people of color and people living in poverty.These are neighborhoods where residents are more likely to rely on non-car modes of transportation while they've historically lacked adequate walking and bicycling infrastructure.

This is in addition to the $25 million already planned for new trails and greenways as part of phase three of the Circle City Forward initiative.“This investment will help close gaps to increase equitable access to job opportunities, education, healthcare, healthy food, recreation, and social and cultural destinations for previously underappreciated neighborhoods,” CICF President and CEO Brian Payne said in a news release.

The Connected Communities initiative will also invest in signage for the new trails, a new bike map, a Greenways Stewardship Fund to support maintenance and beautification, and partnerships with community organizations to increase knowledge and access to the network.B&O Trail: 5 miles of new trail, completing a 16.65-mile corridor that connects the west side to Speedway and Brownsburg, and to the Michigan Street bike lane downtown$5.
