'I have no idea what could have caused that, and I really don’t want to know. It still makes me feel uneasy thinking about it.'

"When I was about 7, I became very, very ill. My grandmother, who was raising me, took me to the doctor, and they had me taken to the emergency room. When you walked into this clearing, you could see a little bit of the neighborhood across the highway that went through the town. I remember walking up to the lake one day and just walking around, relaxing, and looking through that clearing for a while because I was bored.

The staircase was a normal set of wooden stairs going straight down. The snow hadn’t been disturbed in the yard or around any of the windows. Regardless, we made sure the basement door was locked.
