The fire began around 6:45 p.m. in a mobile home situated directly behind the Motel 6 on the Cumberland Parkway. State police saidOfficials have not released the cause of the fire in the mobile home. It was unclear if anyone lived in the mobile home or whether it was used for storage. Firefighters from Dauphin, Cumberland and York counties responded to the blaze and were able to save half of the building. However, the remaining part of the motel reportedly sustained heavy smoke damage.

The next-door Wingate by Wyndham hotel took in the displaced Motel 6 residents. The Red Cross is also assisting the displaced residents.Hector Gonzalez, who was staying with his fiancee at the Motel 6, said they were getting ready to leave the hotel when they walked outside and noticed smoke. Gonzalez said at first they thought it was people smoking cigarettes, but looked over and saw flames coming from the office portion of the building.

“We took our animals, put them in the car and got out,” Gonzalez said. Grabbing the cat and dog, Gonzalez said they had no idea where they would be staying the night but knew they couldn’t stay there. “We weren’t worried about nothing else, as long as we were safe.”
