Discover our must-have car essentials for parents traveling with kids, including entertainment, charging gear, cleaning supplies, and comfort items for a smoother road trip.

After driving thousands and thousands of miles with two young kids in the back seat, I've learned that a family road trip can go sideways for reasons both predictable and ridiculous. Hunger, dead tablets, a sunbeam in the wrong eye, a mysterious sticky mess, a bathroom emergency five minutes after you passed the last decent exit .

. . anything can throw a curveball at a leisurely family road trip. The trick isn't pretending any of that won't happen; it's packing the car like you know it will. As with so many facets of life, my motto for road trips is 'hope for the best; prepare for the worst.' The good news is that the stuff that makes the biggest difference usually isn't complicated, at least in theory. A strong charger, long cables, easy snacks, cleanup gear, a place for trash, and a few boredom killers can turn a much longer day on the road into something a lot more manageable for the long haul. RELATED: Road-Trip Essentials Checklist | Best Convertible Car Seats | 15 Essentials for Your Next Winter Road TripIt's worth noting this list is by no means comprehensive; pre-teens and teenagers require different essentials than babies and toddlers, and their parents will surely have go-tos that differ from mine. But these are the road-trip essentials I keep coming back to, because as a parent, I’ve found they do more than make the car more comfortable; they help keep the whole trip from unraveling at any given moment. 24 Essentials for Road-Tripping with Kids Sensory Activity Board When my kids get restless, but I'm not ready to hand over a screen, I like having something quiet that keeps their hands busy. A sensory board like this gives them something to fuss with without dropping pieces all over the floor or making a ton of noise. For younger kids especially, it's the kind of boredom buster that buys more peace than you'd expect. Back Seat Car Organizer Is it pretty? Not in the slightest. But a seatback organizer gives every snack, toy, and charging cable a home instead of letting everything migrate to the floor, which, in Michigan, is coated in a layer of salt for half the year. The tablet sleeve is especially useful when the kids want a screen but I do not want loose devices bouncing around the cabin. For parents, this is as much about keeping the car sane as it is about storing stuff. Brica Sun Safety Car Window Shade I've learned that if the sun is in my kids' eyes for more than about 10 minutes, the mood in the back seat starts to slide fast. A retractable window shade is one of those simple fixes that pays off all trip long, especially on bright afternoon drives when the sun seems to follow you for hours. Just be careful when retracting these, as, if you let them fling back into the unit too quickly, they can become a tangled mess . 'Smartest in the Car' Road Trip Trivia I'm a big believer in packing at least one low-tech back-seat activity, and road-trip trivia works better than it has any right to. It gets everyone talking, breaks up the miles, and feels a lot more fun than just asking, for the 40th time, who can spot a red barn. For kids old enough to play along, this is a good way to keep the car lively before anyone starts begging for a device. Switch Lite Sooner or later, most parents make peace with the fact that some stretches of a road trip are just better with a screen. I still like starting with cards, riddles, and conversation, but when the novelty wears off, a Switch Lite can absolutely save the back half of a long drive. It's compact, easy to hand back, and a lot less cumbersome in the car than a full-size console setup. Road Trip Riddles If your kids like trying to outsmart you, riddles may work even better than trivia. I like games like this because they turn dead time into actual interaction, and they're easy to pull out in short bursts when attention spans start to wobble. It's also a nice alternative if you want something playful that doesn't feel too school-ish. iPad 11-inch When the riddles run out and the trivia cards are done, a full iPad is the heaviest artillery I've got. The 11-inch screen is big enough that both kids can watch something together without a fight over who has the better angle, and the A16 chip means it handles whatever they throw at it without slowing down. I'd rather save it for the second half of a long drive, but I'm always glad it's there when I need it. 3-Port USB-C Car Charger Once the devices come out, power becomes part of the plan. A serious car charger matters more than most parents think, because there's nothing worse than watching a tablet, handheld game system, and phone all start to die at the same time somewhere in the middle of Ohio. Anker's compact three-port charger is the kind of thing I'd keep plugged in full time. Kids' Travel Tray A tray like this gives kids a flat surface for coloring, sticker books, and other quiet activities that would otherwise end up sliding around on their laps. I like that it makes the back seat feel a little more like a portable desk and a little less like a chaos zone. For longer trips, this thing is a sanity saver. Silicone Snack Cup This is one of those small parenting accessories that punches way above its weight on a long drive. A spill-resistant snack cup cuts down on the classic back-seat avalanche of crackers, cereal, and whatever else seemed like a good idea at the gas station 40 minutes earlier. It won't make the car spotless, but it absolutely helps keep snack time from becoming a full-scale cleanup operation. Leak-Proof Car Trash Can A dedicated car trash can is one of the biggest sanity savers I've found as a parent. Without one, wrappers, napkins, juice pouches, and half-finished snack debris start migrating into cupholders, door pockets, and seat crevices almost immediately. I like having a real place to throw stuff away instead of trying to police a rolling pile of kid mess. Small Trash Bags, 100 Count If you're going to keep a trash can in the car, you need liners with it, because nobody wants to scrub the thing out in the driveway after a long trip. I like keeping a stack of replacement bags in the glovebox or cargo bin so I can swap one in and move on. It's cheap insurance against the specific kind of gross that families create on the road. Color Wonder Mess Free Coloring Activity Set Color Wonder is another mess-free win. The markers only show up on the special paper, which means no stray marks on car seats, clothes, or siblings. The set comes with a carrying case to keep everything together, which saves a lot of 'I can't find the cap' emergencies. Handheld Cordless Car Vacuum Cleaner Post-trip cleanup is its own kind of hell, and a good cordless vacuum changes that. This one is small enough to live in the car, but it actually has enough suction to deal with snack crumbs, sand, and whatever else accumulates. It's the kind of thing you don't think you need until you use it. MF200 Compressed Air Duster This little gadget is the yang to the vacuum's yin, and is great for getting crumbs out of the bottom of car seats before putting them in your car. I've been using one for the past year or so and while the noise is rather obnoxious, it's great for preventing unnecessary crumbs from finding their way deeper into your seat cushions than even the most powerful vacuum is able to suck up. Back Seat Cover + Storage Pocket This is a kick mat and an organizer in one, which means it protects the backs of your front seats from muddy shoes and sticky hands while also giving the kids a place to store things they actually need during the trip. I've had cheaper versions of this that fell apart—this one is built better. Compact First Aid Kit A well-stocked first-aid kit is one of those things I hope I never need but would feel genuinely unprepared without. On a long drive with kids, bumps and scrapes and upset stomachs are inevitable, and having a real kit on hand means I'm not improvising with a leftover fast-food napkin. This one covers a lot of ground in a compact case that fits easily in a cargo bin or under a seat. Refillable Hand Sanitizer, 3-Pack I keep hand sanitizer within easy reach because road trips involve a lot of gas pumps, rest stops, playground detours, and snacks eaten at questionable moments. A slim spray version is easier to stash in a door pocket or center console than a bulky bottle, which means I'm more likely to actually use it. This is one of those small upgrades that makes the car feel better organized. As a bonus, these models are refillable, which keeps plastic waste to a minimum. Hypoallergenic Multi-Use Baby Wipes I don't care how old your kids are, wipes still belong in the car. I use them for sticky hands, mystery smudges, dashboard drips, fast cleanups after drive-through lunches, and the occasional moment where somebody insists they're clean when they very clearly are not. They're one of the few things I never regret overpacking. Disinfecting Wipes Basic wipes are good for basic messes, but sometimes you want to be extra sure you're killing germs in their path and keeping items sanitized for your little ones. Disinfecting wipes make it quick and easy and are worth their weight in gold when messes border on biohazards. Wipe & Go Instant Stain Remover Getting to a washer before a stain dries isn't always feasible. Enter Shout Wipe & Go. These pre-packaged stain wipes have no problem getting even the most egregious coffee stains out of shirts, let alone any messes your family can conjure up. 10-Foot USB-C to USB-C Cable A long cable is just as important as the charger itself. In a family car, a short cord never seems to reach where it actually needs to go, especially when a child in the second row is trying to keep using a device while it charges. A 10-footer gives you the flexibility to route power where it's needed without turning the entire cabin into a tug of war over one outlet. Portable Potty Training Chair This one only really makes sense if you've got the room for it, so it's targeted more toward the minivan or SUV crowd. But if you're traveling with a younger child who can't always wait for the next exit, a portable potty can be a genuine trip saver. The model we used for our children is no longer made, but this is a much more compact option that also costs half the price. Don't forget the liners, either! They'll make cleanup exponentially easier and the aftermath much less harsh on the nostrils. On the Go Water Wow! Reusable Activity Pad These pads are magic for trips. Kids can paint with the water pen and the colors just appear. When it dries, it resets for another round. It's mess-free, screen-free, and good for 30-plus minutes of quiet focus.
