Pierce County Animal Control officials seized 232 birds from a suspected cockfighting operation, though no one had been charged.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department animal control officers seized 232 birds, hens and chickens, from a large cockfighting operation on Aug. 1, 2024. It took a month of prep work before Pierce County Sheriff's officials and multiple animal control agencies raided the Buckley property.

The homeowner was not there at the time, and sheriff's officials report the inside of the home was empty. Moss said officials believe this was part of a larger operation. The animal welfare group Animal Wellness Action said Washington is a national hub for this cruel and barbaric activity despite the state making animal fighting a felony crime.

AWA offers a $2,500 reward for people who offer tips about animal rings that could lead to suspect arrests and convictions."Usually in a cockfighting ring the birds are too dangerous to be around people or other birds because they have the potential to fight or be aggressive," Moss added. "But, in this instance, animal control was able to find shelters and said they’ll try to place all these birds in homes. That way we don’t have to destroy them.
