Steph Curry becomes the first NBA player to reach 4,000 three-pointers in Golden State's win over Sacramento

David Mundee Twenty-three high school basketball players in the Dothan Eagle coverage area have earned all-state honors from the Alabama Sports Writers Association, including five players named first-team all-state.

In all, 13 boys and 10 girls players were honored. In addition to five first-team selections, three players were chosen second team, nine third team and four as honorable mention all-state. Four of the five first-team all-state honors are on the boys side. Those four are Dale County’s Junior Smith in Class 4A, Houston Academy’s Kadyn Mitchell in Class 3A, Providence Christian’s Pearce Boone in Class 2A and Abbeville Christian’s Jayden Buckhannon in AISA. The girls player from the area receiving first-team all-state is Elba’s A’Lyric Whitfield in Class 1A. Receiving second-team all-state are Providence Christian’s Luke Strickland in Class 2A boys and Providence Christian’s Annabeth Townsend in Class 2A girls and Kinston’s Ally Williamson in Class 1A girls. Girls players chosen third-team all-state were Dale County’s Jaslyn Smith in Class 4A, Houston Academy’s Mary Helen Mendheim in Class 3A, Cottonwood’s Keisha Anglin and Ny’Diqua Hardamon in Class 2A plus Abbeville Christian’s Amari George in AISA. Local boys players earning honorable mention all-state were Enterprise’s Tucker Wadsworth in Class 7A, Houston Academy’s Gabe Glover in Class 3A, Abbeville’s Ahmond Billins and Pike Liberal Arts’ Jackson Mitchell in Class 2A. Area girls tabbed honorable were Geneva’s Kaden Ward in Class 4A and Northside Methodist’s Dana Cool in Class 3A. First team honorees Dale County’s Junior Smith, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, averaged 24.7 points, 15.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.1 steals and 4.0 blocks a game in helping the Warriors to an 18-10 record and to the Class 4A regional postseason tournament. Houston Academy’s Kadyn Mitchell, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, averaged 18.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.0 steals per game in helping the Raiders finish 19-5 and reach the Class 3A state semifinals. Providence Christian’s Pearce Boone, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, averaged 16.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 2.2 blocks a game in helping the Eagles to a 30-2 record and to the Class 2A state title. Abbeville Christian’s Jayden Buckhannon, a 6-foot junior guard, averaged 23.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.4 steals a game in helping the Generals to an 18-7 record and to an AISA Class A state runner-up finish. Elba’s A’Lyric Whitfield, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, averaged 21.1 points, 17.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in helping the Tigers to a 17-3 record and to the Class 1A regional finals. Second team honoreesProvidence Christian’s Luke Strickland, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, averaged 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals a game for the 2A state champion Eagles. Strickland preserved Providence’s state semifinal win with a game-ending block shot. Providence Christian’s Annabeth Townsend, a 5-foot-4 senior guard, averaged 19.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.9 steals a game in helping the Providence Christian girls to a 22-7 record and to the Class 2A regional finals. Kinston’s Allyx Williamson, a 5-foot-11 sophomore forward, averaged 17.7 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.4 steals a game in helping the Bulldogs to a 26-2 record and to the Class 1A regional tournament. Third team honoreesDothan’s Dejiah Coleman, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, averaged 18.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals a game in helping the Wolves to a 26-4 record and to a Class 7A regional postseason appearance. Charles Henderson’s Kameron Christian, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, averaged 11.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.1 steals a game in helping the Trojans to a 20-7 record and to the Class 5A regional tournament. Carroll’s Michael Culver, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard, averaged 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals a game in helping the Eagles to a 20-9 record and to the Class 5A regional tournament. Barbour County’s Lennox Myers, a 6-foot-8 senior center, averaged 18.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game for the Jaguars, who finished 10-14 and reached the 2A sub-regional round. Dale County’s Jaslyn Smith, a 6-foot sophomore guard, averaged 18.5 points, 15.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.5 steals a game for Dale County, which finished 8-18. Houston Academy’s Mary Helen Mendheim, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, averaged 13.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 4.2 steals a game in helping the Raiders to a 10-9 record and to the 3A sub-regional round. Cottonwood’s Keisha Anglin, a 5-foot-6 sophomore guard, averaged 21.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.2 steals a game in helping the Bears to a 10-10 record and the Class 2A sub-regional round. Abbeville’s Ny’Diqua Hardamon, a 5-foot-3 senior guard, averaged 15.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.3 steals a game in helping the Yellowjackets to a 24-2 record and the Class 2A state semifinals. Abbeville Christian’s Amari George, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, averaged 11.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 steals a game for Abbeville Christian, which finished 7-19. Honorable mentionEnterprise’s Tucker Wadsworth, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, averaged 11.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game in helping the Wildcats to a 19-7 record and to the Class 7A regional tournament. Houston Academy’s Gabe Glover, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, averaged 18.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game in helping the Raiders to a 19-5 record and to the Class 3A state semifinals. Abbeville’s Ahmod Billins, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in helping the Yellowjackets to a 23-4 record and to the 2A regional finals. Pike Liberal Arts’ Jackson Mitchell, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, averaged 16.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.6 steals a game in helping Pike Liberal Arts to a 12-19 record and to the Class 2A sub-regional round. He also took 29 charges in 31 games. Kaden Ward, Geneva, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, averaged 13.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.5 steals in helping the Panthers to a 22-6 record and to the regional tournament.
