'I've stopped caring that people will dislike me if I say no.'

dove into people's answers to the question:"What’s something you quietly stopped caring about?" In response, even more people wrote in with things they have simply stopped caring about in 2026, so, in the interest of inspiring more people to protect their peace, I thought I would share.

Here's what people had to say:"I used to insist on wearing makeup before leaving the house or letting anyone come over for a visit. Now, I wear it maybe once a week. I just don't prioritize it the same way, and it feels more special to wear it as a bit of self-care rather than as a necessity for acceptance. It doesn’t hurt that it saves a bit of money, as well!""Also, I don’t watch sports on TV like I used to. I enjoy them, but now you have to buy streaming services and packages. I'm not sure that I even know how to watch some of the teams I used to anymore…" "Dating and relationships, aside from friends and family. I'm 72, divorced at 40. Remarried at 47. Now a widower. Can't see getting into the complications of relationships." "Several things: I'm single and love it. No demanding man that I have to take care of like a child. I make enough money not to worry. I don't care about clothes; what's comfortable works. I live a comfortable life without a relationship, without a lot of money, and I'm happy with that." "I really couldn't care less about the pedestal people put on actors, sports stars, and media personalities. They are overpaid and glorified by society, and aren't worth the money and worship they think they deserve. They're entertainers, for god's sake!" "I have come to stop caring about having something new all the time. My truck is 15 years old, and my house is over 40 years old, and I am ooookay with that. They are both in good shape and do what they are supposed to do." "Answering my phone or a knock on my door! I'm retired. I'm not under contract to do either of those things anymore! Leave a message, and maybe I'll get back to you." "I've stopped caring that people will dislike me if I say no or don't jump up to help them. Been an overworked person for a very long time and finally figured out some people will take advantage of your willingness to help and dump it all on you without respecting you. I still do things I need to do or things I care about, but if I don't care, I don't do it. Find someone else to do everything for you." "Definitely not caring what people think. Just because I told you something doesn't mean I want you to start convincing me why it's a good or bad idea. If I want an opinion, I will ask you directly. I'm also completely over buying the latest and greatest things. Most of the time, they are not worth it, and any dopamine effect is over quickly anyway.""An immaculately clean house. I have two toddlers running around. If it saves my sanity to go to sleep with toys on the floor that night, then so be it.""I stopped caring about my marriage. I did everything to make someone else care, and leaving was long overdue. I was exhausted being the breadwinner, cook, housekeeper…the list goes on and on. I was completely unhappy. Married for 38 years, and now I wake up to peace and quiet. I do what I want. I am very grateful to have the life I now have.""People in general. Trying to please everyone is impossible. I now try to keep to myself and do what I like. I'm tired of always having to reach out to people when it's not reciprocated. It's draining, so why?""Family. Yes, I was so overconsumed with everyone else's needs that I wasn't tending to my own. So I am done. They are still family, but I don't care about what they say or need or want from me.""Being a sports fanatic. Younger me would live and die on how my hometown teams were doing. Recently, I mentioned one of them was doing well and a friend joked, 'What are you, a fair weather fan?' which, years ago, would have been fighting words. However, it took me five seconds to respond, 'Hell yeah. I've got a wife, two kids, a dog, a mortgage, the economy is stagnant, the world is on fire, and I have a lawn to mow.' If 'my' team is winning, then yes, I'll share in that joy. If not, I don't have the energy, interest, or time to mope around. If that makes me a fake fan, so be it. I have a Costco run to make.""Buying new music. I still love all of my longtime favorite bands and their CDS, but in the last 10 years or so, there’s only been one band I’ve added to my list of favorites.""I have stopped caring about my social calendar. I moved to a whole new state all on my own, and I'm in the process of getting my master's degree and building a new life for myself. In the beginning of doing all this, I felt so sad and insecure about how empty my social calendar is. But then I think about how I've become familiar with my neighborhood, feel safe and comfortable in my apartment, and have achieved a lot on my own. Once I've graduated, I can put more emphasis on creating a community, but I was spending so much more time focusing on my social calendar than all the other amazing achievements I've made in the last year.""Cooking — I don't care about cooking anymore, and I don't care if choosing not to cook challenges someone's idea of womanhood. I don't enjoy it the way I once did, and I've made peace with that. If I cook once in a blue moon, that's enough for this season of my life. Cooking used to be tied to my identity. It no longer is. I'm actively unlearning the belief that I'm less of a woman because I don’t want to cook all the time, or even often.""Any consumerism-laden holiday, from Valentine’s Day, Mother's and Father's Day, all the way to Christmas. The greeting cards, the gifts, the decor — it's all too much. Spend time together, make or share a nice meal, play games, or have a fun experience together, hug and say, 'I love you.' Why all the $6 greeting cards, holiday-specific decor we rent storage for, etc., when we can make the day special without the fluff?! Over it!"If you have something you've quietly quit caring about in the big '26, tell me all about it in the comments! Or, if you prefer, you can write in to the anonymous form below.
