, an Asian American illustrator and writer, though in her lifetime and to her frustration, she was often misidentified as Japanese. My husband and I were captivated by her book as much as our daughter, and we fell down a rabbit hole of researching Fujikawa’s life and collecting her work. When ‘Babies’ was published in 1963, it was one of the first children’s books to feature people of different races playing together, just existing together.
