GM is killing the unpopular transmission type, replacing the CVT with a traditional eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2027 Chevy Equinox's continuously variable automatic transmission is getting axed, according to GM's vehicle order guide. Formerly the only transmission available on the front-wheel-drive Equinox, it will be replaced by a traditional eight-speed automatic.
The eight-speed auto will also replace the CVT in other GM models, such as the GMC Terrain. All 2027 Chevrolet Equinox models will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, according to GM's vehicle order guide. Currently, a continuously variable automatic transmission is standard on the front-wheel-drive Equinox, while all-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic. The statement dovetails with an earlier announcement from Ohio representative Elgin Rogers , regarding GM's $39 million investment in its Toledo Propulsion Systems facility. Rogers said the investment is intended to 'increase capacity and introduce a new transmission variant to support production of the Chevrolet Equinox and other GM vehicles.' This means the Equinox's mechanical twin, the GMC Terrain, will also ditch the CVT on FWD models.Otherwise, the 2027 Equinox is expected to continue with minimal changes in relation to the current model. A post on GM Inside News suggests the Cacti Green exterior color will no longer be available, replaced by a new Autumn Harvest Metallic finish. Additionally, the Santorini Blue stitching on the RS trim will be replaced by Torch Red.The CVT's HistoryThe move is the latest in a recent trend among manufacturers to remove or eliminate CVTs from their product lineups. Nissan, a long-time champion of the gearless gearbox, recently replaced the CVT in its updated 2025 Murano with a traditional nine-speed automatic. Interestingly, the Nissan Murano debuted in 2003 with a CVT. The first CVT used in a production model in the United States was the 1989 Subaru Justy GL, and the company remains committed to the CVT. Once billed as the technical solution to a problem few drivers were aware of, CVTs promised to increase fuel efficiency and smooth out vehicle acceleration qualities. Even better, they generally required fewer moving parts, which potentially translated into savings for the manufacturer and—in theory—the customer. Unfortunately, nearly every CVT in production couldn't quell the mid-range groan it summoned from the engine when the driver put their foot down. Plus, the sensation at the wheel was alien to older drivers accustomed to an engine traveling through its rev range until the transmission swapped a gear, then repeating the process as necessary to achieve a desired speed.➡️ Skip the lot.
