Powerhouse clashes or old vs new, every cycle there are new matchups that emerge with their own set of appeals to casual fans, players and coaches alike., the realization settled in. This feels like a heavyweight fight that the entire state will pay attention to over the next two seasons.Prosper’s flagship school against Prosper’s newest 6A high school in Walnut Grove coming off of a 12-1 season that resulted in them advancing to the regional semifinals. A lot of these students likely grew up together or know each other from outside-of-school activities with the campuses being just five miles apart.Prosper has already established itself over the last decade as one of the playoff staples in the D-FW area. Is Walnut Grove on track to do the same despite jumping from 5A Division II to the highest classification in Texas and joining District 6?One of the resurgent programs over the last 10 years coming off of a regional final run in Class 5A Division II taking on the 5A Division I state runner-up? Yes, please. Melissa moves up to Division I and instantly poses a challenge to the likes of Lone Star and Frisco Reedy in District 5-5A. During this realignment cycle, we’ll see both teams led by two of the emerging stars in Texas high school football in Melissa sophomore running back Bear Tabor and Lone Star sophomore quarterback Trey Wright .Mesquite opened in 1902. West Mesquite opened in 1976. The campuses are just about three miles apart and the two programs will play for the first time ever this fall. That sounds insane, but it’s true.Mesquite always paced ahead of West when it came to enrollment but now both schools meet in District 7-5A Division I as Mesquite drops down for the first time. Both schools are also in the middle of recent coaching changes with Mesquite’s Rafael Thomas entering his second season andTwo programs who struggled in recent history but have found their strides over the last few seasons meet in District 6-5A Division I. Richland only had six winning seasons from 2004 to 2022 but under Ged Kates, have slowly rebuilt and gone 21-8 the last three years. Creekview have just seven winning seasons since 2000 but in two years under Dusty Ortiz, have gone 8-3 and 9-2, winning more games than the last 10 seasons combined.Two recent state champions from two rapidly-growing areas became district foes in District 4-5A Division II. Another commonality between the two is that Anna also moved up to 5A Division II the realignment immediately after winning state at 4A Division I. Celina‘s debut season in 5A should still have the historic program competing at a high level and one of the immediate contenders.in District 4 Class 5A Division II after going 30-7 over the last three seasons.
