Charming, capable, and user-friendly, this XC40 Recharge Ultimate's price asks if you want it bad enough.
luxury electric SUV was available only as a dual-motor all-wheel-drive vehicle, but that changed with the rear-drive 2024 XC40 Recharge Single Motor. The less powerful but more affordable option boasts more range and slightly quicker charging; beginning with the 2025 versions, the entire model line is set to be renamed the EX40.
Still, this XC40 Recharge Ultimate is competent enough to pace highway speeders and pass slower traffic, but there are quicker electric SUVs available. It can still be fun to drive, though. Volvo buries one-pedal driving controls under a couple menus in the infotainment interface, and unlike some competitors, it is not especially adjustable. Options are on, off, or auto. If left on, there’s noticeable braking every time you lift off the accelerator. Volvo says the automatic setting manages the stopping force based on the distance to the vehicle ahead, but it wasn’t always consistent every time we used it .
Passenger space in the XC40 Recharge Single also trails rivals. Legroom in the Model Y and GV60 exceeds the XC40’s 40.9 inches up front and 36.1 inches in back. The Volvo offers the slightest bit more rear headroom than the Genesis, but front headroom of 37.6 inches is the worst of the trio. Apple CarPlay is included, but for the first time in some years, we skipped the phone mirroring and used only the XC40 Recharge’s native Google-based onboard software. It worked well, and not that it’s unique to this vehicle, but Google Maps’ public charger-finding feature produced great results. A four-year Digital Services package subscription is standard on the XC40 Recharge and features Maps, the Google Play store, and Google Assistant.
