Can an injection of off-road flair bring some zest to the newest Pathfinder?
has waded amid its midsize three-row SUV competition in relative obscurity since its debut for 2022, delivering a family-friendly package nearly devoid of sizzle.
On the useful side, the Rock Creek gets a power bump over regular Pathfinders. Its 3.5-liter V-6 is shared with those models, but here Nissan has re-tuned it to run on premium fuel, pushing its numbers from 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque to 295 hp and 270 lb-ft. All-wheel drive is standard, as is the same nine-speed, ZF-sourced automatic transmission used by other Pathfinders.was known for? The extra power from the V-6 is welcome, though the engine’s power still peaks at high rpm.
The tires have a mixed effect on the Pathfinder’s ride quality. At lower speeds, the chunky, thick-sidewall Toyo all-terrain tires and the wheels’ modest 18-inch diameter squish over bumps quite well. But the taller, seemingly softer-sprung suspension runs out of damping easily at higher speeds, resulting in some wheel flutter over higher-frequency bumps and extra body lean, dive, and squat when turning, stopping, or accelerating.
We didn’t try venturing any farther off-road in the Rock Creek than we have previously in other Pathfinders, mostly because the mild suspension changes and even those Toyo tires aren’t enough to justify a bumper-threatening run down anything tougher than a rutted two-track. The Pathfinder remains a car-based, unibody SUV with relatively tame ground clearance—7.7 inches including the suspension lift. The lift helps improve the SUV’s approach, departure, and breakover angles a teensy bit, from 16.
