After waiting more than six years to bring the previous generation global Ranger midsize pickup back to the US market, Ford is now launching a new generation just months after the rest of the world. This time the US is also getting the high-performance Ranger Raptor as well.
The new Ranger rides on a substantially updated version of the T6 truck platform used on the outgoing model. This same basic architecture has already been on sale here for about two years as the basis of the new Bronco. Among the biggest changes to the platform is a new hydroformed front frame section that is wider and enables the installation of more powertrain options. The track front and rear has been extended by two inches and the wheelbase is increased by a similar amount.
The overall length of the Ranger remains virtually unchanged at 210.6-inches. The extra wheelbase contributes to slight improvements in approach and departure angles off-road although the breakover angle is a bit worse. The other major dimensional change is height which has increased by three inches to 74.4-inches.The most immediately apparent change to the new Ranger though is the design.
Like its truck siblings, the Ranger now adopts the C-clamp wraparound signature lighting theme that’s supposed to imply the “Built Ford Tough” tagline. It’s a good look that clearly calls out that this Ranger comes from the same DNA as the F-series and Maverick and stands apart from competitors. The hood and flanks are more sculpted than before with fenders that bulge out a bit giving the new Ranger a more muscular look.
It starts off with all of the equipment that comes standard on the Ranger Lariat and then adds from there. The same 3.0-liter version of the twin-turbo V6 is installed but with slightly less power at 405-hp. It wouldn’t be a Raptor without getting wider, and this high-performance Ranger adds 3.5-inches compared to its lesser siblings. Like all Raptors this one has Fox off-road dampers, in this case, 2.
In the cab, the Raptor aluminum paddle shifters, and an assortment of accents on the dash and Ford Performance seats in the Code Orange color unique to Raptor models. The overhead console has six upfitter switches to control aftermarket accessories. Like the four-cylinder Ranger, the Raptor will be available from launch in late summer 2023.
