The four-banger 'Stang makes a healthy 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, but some of its quickness can also be attributed to the 10-speed automatic transmission, which is now the only gearbox available with the base engine. Our test car was also helped by the $3,475 High Performance package, which adds a limited-slip differential, paddle shifters, and 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer tires.
Even with an automatic transmission, it takes some practice to get the launch right. If you leave with too much wheelspin, the ECU pulls power for the rest of the run—even with traction and stability control disabled—and the upshifts become sluggish. After one tire-squealing launch, the dashboard lit up with warning and errors like Clark Griswold's house in December. Cycling the ignition off and on again cleared the lights and returned the Mustang to full capability.
Do everything right, and the Mustang EcoBoost is slightly quicker than any V-6 Chevy Camaro we've tested and much, much quicker than the six-cylinder Dodge Challenger. It's also significantly quicker than. That car, with 310 hp, needed 5.3 seconds and 13.9 seconds to hit 60 mph and the quarter mile, respectively. There are, however, quicker four-cylinder performance cars out there.
