We jump behind the wheel of the all-new 2024 Can-Am Maverick R X RS Smart Shox side-by-side for high-po off-road thrills.
Only one can stand atop the podium, and in the race for top billing in the sport side-by-side class, that competition just steepened with the's arrival. Packing massive amounts of turbocharged horsepower, more than 2feet of suspension travel, a revolutionary dual-clutch gearbox, and a top speed approaching triple digits, this vehicle is not at all for the faint of heart.
Swapping into manual mode allowed for full control over gear selection via the column-mounted paddle shifters. As with most dual-clutch boxes, the Rotax-sourced unit in Maverick R won't allow the engine to over-rev on acceleration and will automatically downshift as necessary to prevent stalling. We found the sweet spot for our driving style to be a combination of the automatic and manual drive modes.
Valve stem issues aside, the new Tenacity XNR tires from ITP worked incredibly well. Our Maverick R X RS test vehicle sported the larger 32-inch-diameter rubber, which provided excellent traction on the graded dirt roads, sand washes, silt beds, and rocky trails. We didn't get into any deep sand dunes or mud, but we're fairly confident the tires won't disappoint there, either.Sliding behind the wheel of the Maverick R felt like home.
The biggest rub lies in the fact that to use the company's new navigation system, BRP Go, you'll need a physical connection to a smartphone. Everything runs on the BRP Go app, which is then projected on the screen. Apple's proprietary Lightning connector doesn't particularly like to connect when the port is the least bit dirty, which is an obvious potential issue off-road.
