The former Mahwah and University of Virginia standout is the latest New Jersey high school alum to be taken in the first round of the MLB Draft

He then went onto the University of Virginia, where expectations were even higher as the top-ranked baseball player from the Garden State. And just like he did at Mahwah, Teel excelled, emerging as one of the best college baseball players in the country.Teel — a former standout at Mahwah High School and an All-American catcher at Virginia — was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 14th overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft on Sunday.
Remo, who was drafted back in 1980 by the Chicago Cubs, knew Teel was going to be a special player when he stepped on Mahwah’s baseball field the first time. Teel batted .574 with eight homers and 31 RBI and served as Mahwah’s closer, picking up three wins in relief.
