Dallas-Fort Worth’s health care industry closes out 2021 just as it started it – with staffing shortages, wards of COVID-19 patients and growing concerns...

After nearly two years, it’s clear that the virus that’s claimed more than 800,000 lives in the U.S. isn’t going away.

Though the coronavirus vaccine rollout early in the year promised some relief for exhausted health care workers, that dream has yet to be realized. Only 59.5% of people in Dallas County eligible for the vaccine have received the jab, and the initial vaccines are requiring boosters to guard against the new, highly-contagious omicron variant.

One of the most glaring results of the pandemic is a staffing shortage that’s left health care far behind other industries in job recovery.in positive, pre-pandemic territory as of November, with 75,100 added positions last month, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Texas Workforce Commission. But the health care and social assistance sector is nearly 27,000 jobs short of its peak in February 2020.
