2022 is the deadliest year for homicides in three decades; and it’s not over
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus speaks during a news conference in July after two men were found dead behind an abandoned gas station on the Northeast Side.SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is seeing its deadliest year in nearly three decades, having surpassed last year’s number of homicides in the first nine months of 2022.
And its higher than the 168 homicides recorded by the SAPD in all of 2021, according to data from the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System. While the FBI will make the final homicide number for 2022 public when it issues its annual national crime report next year, including data from the SAPD, many are already alarmed.
The overall national trend, however, is hopeful, as 70 major U.S. cities collectively recorded 4,511 homicides in the first six months of 2022, down from 4,624 in 2021, according to data collected by the Major Cities Chiefs Association.
