2022 election: Q&A with Kelly Martinez, candidate for San Diego County Sheriff [Opinion]
There are seven candidates for San Diego County Sheriff on the June 7 ballot in the race to replace retired Sheriff Bill Gore, who may be most remembered for the high number of deaths that occurred in county jails on his watch. The problem persists. There was another jail death Thursday, the ninth this year, all since Gore left.
The public expects law enforcement to keep it safe, and I am committed to doing that. Our criminal justice system needs to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we must prioritize data-driven, evidence-based approaches to public safety. A: The three largest issues that contribute to jail deaths in San Diego County are staffing, training and jail infrastructure. The Sheriff’s Department is critically short-staffed in the jails. We have over 200 detentions deputy vacancies and about 200 medical staff vacancies.
Our staff closely aligns with the demographic that we serve. I am excited to be the first female undersheriff in our history and if I am elected, I would be the first female sheriff in San Diego County. The way to increase diversity is to actively hire, support, mentor and promote qualified individuals from all communities and demographics.
Q: What do you feel about current efforts to revise criminal justice reform laws like Propositions 47 and 57? What changes would you support? A: I want to commend the county Board of Supervisors and the leadership of Nathan Fletcher for pushing forward the Mobile Crisis Response Team model. County leaders who worked in this area began these discussions with law enforcement and kept moving the idea forward. They were undeterred by skeptics and knew this approach would bring a non-law enforcement response to persons in crisis who needed civilian professionals, not an armed response.
