The iX represents a “Bangle Butt”–esque inflection point for BMW.
. Although the new iX's exterior appearance and avant-garde interior design are designed to lure shoppers into BMW showrooms, its carbon-heavy underpinnings and driving character hope to make buyers think twice about leaving to order something else online. The iX xDrive50 sports industry-first brushed electromagnetic motors , one at either axle, which combine for 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. A 111.
The test numbers are interesting, but what they don't tell you is just how surprisingly wonderful the iX is to drive.have tended to be stiff and passionless, but the iX—like the new 2 Series coupe—feels like a throwback to the company's heyday. It feels light on its feet, powerful, and playful. Fun, even—especially with the Hans Zimmer-penned soundtrack worming into your ears.
The steering is light and highly accurate, making the iX easy to place on the road. The iX's ride is well sorted, as well. Equipped with the optional air suspension system, our test BMW comfortably handled bumps and impacts while also mitigating body roll. If there are any nits to pick with the iX, they're with the brakes. Although there is plenty of regenerative braking on tap, the iX is incapable of full one-pedal driving to a stop, and pedal feel is soft and mushy.
As one might expect with a flagship BMW, the iX xDrive50 isn't exactly accessible. Prices start at $84,195, and our loaded test SUV stickered for $104,820. There's no denying that's a hefty chunk of change, but compared to its competitive set, the iX is a steal. Both the Mercedes EQS SUV and Tesla Model Xnorth of $104K, and neither offers a similarly compelling blend of style, luxury, and performance as the iX does.
Ultimately, the new iX may be as polarizing as the Bangle Butt 7 Series, but it likely will be no less revolutionary for its maker. After what feels like a decade of internal soul searching, BMW has returned to form with the iX, offering a stylish, tech-forward vehicle that drives the way enthusiasts expect a BMW to.
