Your perspective on the year that was 2021 likely depends on if you’re a glass half empty or half full type of person. Half full: Trump was defeated and despite their best efforts to overturn a free and fair election, Joe Biden took office. Half empty: There was a freaking insurrection and Trumpism is now a self-sustaining organism that doesn’t even need Trump anymore. Half full: The vaccines are safe, effective and the Biden administration did an excellent job making sure we all have access.
An unfortunate byproduct of consuming the amount of news required to do this job is severe, near-crippling cynicism. The glass is always half empty and the other half is something gross, like egg nog. Still, even my Grinch like heart can’t help but swell ever so slightly when I manage to quiet the din of non-stop media and look around at some of the unequivocal good happening in the world around me.
The media ecosystem, especially TV and internet, naturally gravitates toward the loudest, angriest voice in the room making it easy to forget that most people are not hate fueled monsters. Most people are just going about their lives, only paying attention to politics when they have to. Most people don’t punch flight attendants when asked to wear a mask. My resolution this year is to pay more attention to most people and less to the loudest, angriest voice in the room.
