2021 was marked by extremes across the U.S.
on Monday that the year 2021 was marked by exceptional warmth and devastating severe weather — and had the second-highest number of billion-dollar weather and climate disasters on record.
Dating back to 1980, 2021 was the third-costliest year on record, with the combined disasters totaling more than $145 billion, according to NOAA., severe drought and excessive heat in the West and Northwest caused numerous reservoirs to drop to record levels, and a June heatwave in the Pacific Northwest sent temperatures skyrocketing, “obliterating records.” The Post cited NOAA which assigned the cost of the western drought and heat at $8.9 billion, making it “2021′s fourth-most expensive event.
Reportedly, 2021′s costliest event was Hurricane Ida, with damages of $75 billion, ranking as the fifth-most expensive hurricane on record, the Post reported.
