Detectives say a man killed in Oakland last year may be the victim of a serial killer operating primarily in Stockton.

Stockton detectives have now tied seven shootings — six of them fatal — to a single individual. They believe the person is targeting individuals who are walking alone on dark, quiet streets. Last week, Stockton police announced five murders committed from July to September were carried out by the same person; on Monday night, they confirmed two more shootings in 2021.

According to a statement sent to SFGATE by the Oakland Police Department, officers got a ShotSpotter hit on the 5700 block of Harmon Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. on Saturday April 10, 2021. Officers responding to the hit found a 40-year-old Oakland man suffering from at least one gunshot wound; he died from his injuries. A police department spokesperson said the man's identity is being withheld"pending notification to next of kin.

This is the first known shooting linked to the suspect. Six days later, the killer shot a 46-year-old woman at Park and Union streets in Stockton. She survived. Stockton police said they have"physical evidence" connecting the cases. Although they have not elaborated on what this evidence is, it's possible that ballistics matches are being made to the same weapon used in each shooting. The person's known victims now include:Park and Union, Stockton4900 West Lane
