Robert Bowers, the gunman who perpetrated the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history by killing 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue, has been sentenced to death by the federal jury
The gunman who stormed a synagogue in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community and killed 11 worshippers will be sentenced to death for perpetrating the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history, a jury decided Wednesday.
He showed little reaction as the sentence was announced, briefly acknowledging his legal team and family as he was led from the courtroom. A judge will formally impose the sentence later. Wednesday's verdict marks the first time federal prosecutors have sought and won a death sentence during Biden's presidency.Attorney General Merrick Garland imposed a moratorium on executions in July 2021 after the Trump administration oversaw a record 13 executions in its final months.Bowers did not dispute that he had shot the congregants but he argued that he had not been motivated by a hatred of Jewish people.
New Light Congregation accepts the jury’s decision and believes that, as a society, we need to take a stand that this act requires the ultimate penalty under the law."
