CLAIM: Journalist Hana Mahameed is back on camera with her face covered in bandages after being wounded by an Israeli grenade in the latest Israel-Hamas war.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Social media users are sharing an image of Mahameed in 2015. Mahameed, an Arab-Israeli correspondent for a Lebanon-based TV station,that she was hit in the face by a sound grenade fired by Israeli police during a clash with Palestinian demonstrators in east Jerusalem.
According to Israeli police, the clash took place while forces were detaining the father of a Palestinian teenager who had stabbed and wounded an Israeli teen before being shot dead by police. This attack, as well as anotherin which a Palestinian killed two Israelis and injured two more, including a toddler, prompted Israeli authorities to close east Jerusalem’s Old City to all Palestinians who did not live, work or study there.
Mahameed is covering the current conflict from Jerusalem for Al Mayadeen, which recently reported that she is facing personal threats in response to her coverage.This is part of AP’s effort to address widely shared misinformation, including work with outside companies and organizations to add factual context to misleading content that is circulating online.
