NBC10’s Deanna Durante has more. National Police Week is a time to honor the courage and sacrifice of those in law enforcement who answer the call to help and save lives.
“I was just trying to do my job,” Fischer said. Fischer credited his own quick thinking with saving his life. He applied a tourniquet to his leg and secured his weapon, actions that helped prevent further harm. On Wednesday, May 13 he was awarded the Medal of Valor during the Montgomery County District Attorney’s commendation ceremony surrounded by his family.
Dozens of officers and detectives from departments across the county were honored for their work — from tracking sexual predators to disarming store robbers and saving lives. Whitpain Township officer Katherine Essentheir was also recognized after helping save a choking baby shortly after returning from maternity leave. She has remained in touch with the family celebrating milestones like the child’s first birthday. Armed intruders broke into the home he shared with his mother, Bernadette Gaudio.
She was shot and Gaudio rushed to help her.
"It was his great sense of humor and his, just the light that he brought. Lots of love and light," Bernadette Gaudio said of her son.
“It’s just beautiful you know that Andrew gets this award," Gaudio did not survive but his actions were credited with helping save his mother’s life. His family accepted the award on his behalf.
“For Andrew, for the people, the first responders and for all the people who have supported us and made sure justice was served,” his mother said. Norristown Officer Tyler Wagner All were honored for putting their own lives at risk to protect others — a reminder of the bravery behind the badge, and beyond it.
