ChatGPT was released to the public less than a year ago, but it’s already had a transformative impact across industries, from media, to tech, to education and more. Indeed, many business leaders and professionals are already experimenting with ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence tools, and some have already incorporated them into everyday workflows.
The rise of generative AI fundamentally alters the scope of the VP of engineering role, as it renders traditional development practices obsolete, changes the skill set requirements for the team and creates potential security challenges. AI can greatly accelerate engineering’s output, but leaders need to overcome their own learning curve and ensure the team’s skill set development to maximize its benefit.
As more everyday uses for generative AI arise, the role of an AI ethicist increases in importance. There’s a growing need to address complex issues surrounding AI, ethics and regulation. The role of an AI ethicist is multidisciplinary and includes ensuring ethical AI development; upholding governance standards on transparency, bias and explainability; and ensuring accountability in addressing legitimate concerns of content and copyright owners.
Prompt engineers will be necessary for companies relying on generative AI; its outputs are only as good as the requests going in. For example, in text-to-text requests, attention to qualities including specificity, tone and structure is essential in order to optimize results. Getting this right requires a specific skill set and continuous learning. -
As the use of generative AI grows, the role of data scientist is poised for significant evolution. This technology promises to streamline operations such as data cleansing and feature engineering, allowing data professionals to pivot toward more inventive and strategic endeavors, such as formulating novel or fundamental machine learning models and insightful results interpretation. -
Rather than a specific role, I want to call out a specific function of most roles: communication. Creating clear communication that’s concise and to the point and having a clear understanding of the content is very challenging in our global working environment—especially when the content has a multilingual or multiregional audience. Generative AI has helped people “clean up” their writing to be more effective communicators.
