Edgar Wright’s Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy is chock-full of references, cameos, and Easter eggs. Here are the 20 best across all three films.
Edgar Wright's Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy holds several Easter eggs, references, and cameos across all three films, and here are the 20 best. The Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy is a series of anthology films starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. While not connected in any way regarding story details, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End make up the trilogy with all three being directed by Wright and written by the filmmaker alongside Pegg.
18 Ed’s Plan Foreshadows Shaun Of The Dead’s Plot Throughout all three Cornetto films, Wright and Pegg implement many elements that foreshadow the coming stories. In Shaun of the Dead, this is done through Nick Frost's Ed who lists his plan for his and Shaun's day of drinking. Ed plans to have "a bloody Mary first thing, a bite at the King's Head, a couple at the Little Princess, stagger back here and bang! Back at the bar for shots.
15 Hot Fuzz’s Lord Of The Rings Cameos The second film in the Cornetto trilogy was Hot Fuzz. Much like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz has various celebrity cameos. In the latter though, two are interestingly The Lord of the Rings centered. In the film's opening, Nicholas Angel - Pegg's character - is stabbed in the hand by a Santa Claus who is played by none other than Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.
11 Hot Fuzz Features A Joke That Links To The World’s End One of the funnier jokes in Hot Fuzz comes as Angel is chasing a suspect and utters "You mothers..." as he rounds a corner to see a group of parents with their strollers. As revealed by Edgar Wright in the film's DVD commentary, this joke was originally written for a film the director wrote when he was younger about a group of men doing a pub crawl.
7 The World’s End’s “Paint It Red” Joke Sets Up The Film’s Ending At the beginning of The World's End, Gary states that he and his friends will paint the town red, a common phrase used to indicate a night out. By the end of the film, the Blanks leave Earth due to Gary's intervention. This causes an apocalyptic event that turns the sky above Newton Haven red, a neat way of taking the harmless phrase the film began with and turning it into a reality.
With The World's End though, Pegg and Wright chose not to cite their influences in the film. This is to make it feel more like a copy of prior films in an Easter egg to the Blanks doing the same to humanity. This continues the Easter egg across all three films in a way, with Wright and Pegg having excellent reasoning to not reference The World's End's inspirations as they did with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
