Many parents face being hit with a massive income drop at the end of August
A two-week warning has been issued over three different benefit payments coming to an end. Parents face a big income drop at the end of August if their children have left full-time education.
What are the Child Benefit rules? Guidance on the GOV.UK website says: "Your Child Benefit stops on August 31 on or after your child's 16th birthday if they leave education or training. It continues if they stay in approved education or training, but you must tell HM Revenue and Customs . Your child must also be 16 or 17 when they start their course, studying for one or two academic years at a school or college and living with you in the UK. Your child must be accepted onto the course before they turn 19.
Child Benefit pays a weekly rate of £24 for an eldest or only child and £15.90 for additional children, with payments going into accounts every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. So for one child, that's £96 a month or £1,248 over a year . If you have a second child, the combined total goes up £159.60 a month or £2,074.80 a year.
What about Universal Credit rules for children? Universal Credit pays an extra amount for having children, on top of the standard allowance. You can get £315 a month for a first child or £269.58 per month . For your second child and any other eligible children, you get £269.58.
