Many consider Tiger Woods' 2000 season to be the best in history. However, this Masters champion thinks Scottie Scheffler's 2024 season was better.
Tiger Woods' 2000 season set a virtually impossible standard in professional golf, so few dispute that it was the best in the sport's modern era. But there is at least one golf star who thinks otherwise.
Not that what Woods did at the turn of the century wasn't at the highest level, but Bubba Watson has another champion in mind for the best season ever.'That was the best year we've ever seen,' Watson told Golf.com's Sean Zak in a recent interview, talking about Scottie Scheffler's 2024 season.'I know Tiger did some stuff in 2000, but Scottie's year was the best we've ever seen with all the talent around the world now playing.'The two-time Masters champion did not really elaborate on his reasons for choosing one season over the other, other than the more international presence on the PGA Tour now.But the comparison is hard to follow beyond what the results show.Tiger Woods played 20 PGA Tour events during 2000 without missing a cut. He finished in the top-5 17 times, including nine wins and four runner-up finishes. Three of his titles came in major championships.A T5 finish at the Masters was the only major Tiger did not win.As if it wasn't enough, Woods also won the European Tour's Johnnie Walker Classic that season. In contrast, Scottie Scheffler had seven wins in 19 PGA Tour events played in 2024. He also did not miss a cut and added two runner-up finishes and seven other top-10s to his titles. Among his victories was his second Green Jacket for winning the Masters Tournament. In addition to his Tour results, he also won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics and the unofficial Hero World Challenge title.Watson spoke of Scheffler's extraordinary season while celebrating the successes of his caddie, Ted Scott. Watson and Scott have a long-standing relationship, having worked together during the 46-year-old's prime.According to Watson, he was the one who recommended that Scott start working with a young player, which eventually led to Scottie Scheffler:'Some pros started calling him about 'hey what about if you come work for me', and I said... we talked about it and I said 'man if you could find a young guy that you could help as much as you've helped me, go help them, it'd be amazing.' I didn't think he was going to go to Scottie Scheffler's bag and change the world.'Watson won both of his green jackets with Scott on the bag. The two parted ways in 2021, just weeks before Scheffler arrived on the scene as the caddie's new employer.Since then, the current World No. 1 has won 13 PGA Tour titles, including two Masters' himself.More Golf: Tony Finau Has Only 'Scratched the Surface' with Masters, Majors Warning
