Red Lobster started in 1968 in Florida. The company closed two Dallas restaurants on May 13, 2024 as part of a sweeping nationwide closure.50 restaurants in more than 20 states, including two in Dallas and two east of the D-FW area in Tyler and in Longview.
The two Red Lobsters affected in Dallas were near I-635 and Greenville Avenue in Lake Highlands and near I-35E and Loop 12 in northwest Dallas. They were the last remaining Red Lobsters in Dallas proper, though others remain open in North Texas: in Arlington, Denton, Duncanville, Fort Worth, Frisco, Irving, Lewisville, Mesquite, North Richland Hills and Plano., according to Bloomberg. The story cited “onerous leases and labor costs” among its problems.
The company dates back to 1968, the brainchild of restaurateur Bill Darden. Darden and Dallas’ Norman Brinker will go down as two of the most influential entrepreneurs for casual dining in the United States. Red Lobster was “not only one of the first seafood chains in the U.S. but also one of the first casual-dining concepts, period,” Guszkowski wrote., Senior Food Reporter.
