Two Pennsylvania will spend at least 10 years in prison for abusing care home residents with disabilities.

DISABILITIES. TYLER SMITH AND ZACHARY DINELL WERE BOTH EMPLOYEES OF MAGUIRE MEMORIAL, AN INPATIENT FACILITY IN NEW BRIGHTON WHICH CARES FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH SEVERE PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL AND EMOTIONAL DISABILITIES. ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE. SMITH AND DONNELL ADMITTED TO ABUSING PATIENTS FROM JUNE 2016 AND SEPTEMBER 2017, WHICH INCLUDES PUNCHING AND KICKING THEM, RUBBING LIQUID IRRITANTS IN THEIR EYES AND MOUTHS.

Prosecutors said both were charged with a hate crime, since they attacked the victims because they were disabled. The sentencing of Smith was a day the sister of one of the victims didn't think would come. "My Nicholas was so contracted he couldn't turn over. He couldn't raise his hands. He couldn't speak. All he could do was lay there and take whatever they spewed upon him. How anybody could hurt those innocent, especially him – and I'm not negating anybody else's tender child – but Nicholas was a special star in a world that that needs special stars," Catherine Wickline said.

Smith also had the chance to address the families and the court, saying he was ashamed of his actions.
