“Officers arrived on scene, noticed that the ATM was open and that there were keys still in the machine,” Triplett said. “The officers did a really good job of getting surveillance video of the vehicle very quickly, and luckily, a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy was able to catch the vehicle going northbound on I-15.”
After questioning, they revealed they were hired by an unknown individual, given cash to buy a car, and instructed to steal the ATM’s hard drive and download information onto another device. Investigators believe the criminals were trying to install malware on the ATM’s hard drive or replace it with a device designed to skim card information.Tripplett said the suspects were cooperative, but they couldn’t provide further details about their employer or the extent of the operation.
