UPDATE: The shooting in West Valley City stemmed from a fight between two groups of students, police said.
Onlookers console one another as police investigate a fatal shooting near Hunter High School in West Valley City Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022.Two high school students were killed and another was injured Thursday in a West Valley City shooting, police said.
The shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups of high school students on the sidewalk, West Valley City police spokesperson Roxanne Vainuku said at a Thursday news conference. The students involved knew each other, she added, and some of them went to Hunter High School. As of 1:30 p.m., police were still investigating the sidewalk scene, which should take several more hours, Vainuku said. The shooting happened along a major thoroughfare, bordered by weedy plots of open land on either side.
Two smaller crime scenes near houses in nearby neighborhoods were under investigation as well — sites where authorities believe they will find more evidence, Vainuku said.
