When a scientist discovers Blu is the last male of his kind, he convinces Linda to take him to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, a wild female macaw. The two birds later get kidnapped by smugglers. Since Blu never learnt to fly is chained to Jewel, and they escape on foot. This leads them to a wild adventure through the coastal city. In Rio 2, Blu, Jewel, and their three children travel to the Amazon in search of other macaws. Blu continues to struggle in the wild while a vengeful cockatoo named Nigel chases him. The movies feature the voices of Jamie Foxx as Nico, Jesse Eisenberg as Blu, Anne Hathaway as Jewel, and Jemaine Clement as Nigel. Carlos Saldanha directed and co-wrote both animated movies. He reportedly wanted the movies to feature a penguin that washed ashore on Ipanema Beach. However, after learning about Happy Feet and Surf’s Up, he pivoted to making the movie about macaws (via, Eisenberg said he got the role while filming The Social Network. The studio approached him, asking if he could record his lines on weekends when not portraying Mark Zuckerberg. “It was the perfect antidote to get out of the mindset of my character in The Social Network, who was so severe, and in some ways so joyless. It was fun to unwind,” the actor recalled. Rio premiered in theaters on April 15, 2011, followed by Rio 2 on April 11, 2014.
