Damage from a mid-air collision between two planes sits within the fence line of the Dallas Executive Airport on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022.Two crew members have been identified following the devastating aircraft collision that killed six at a Dallas air show Saturday.
Allied Pilots Association officials said former American Airlines captains Terry Barker and Len Root had been on board the B-17 Flying Fortress, a Houston-based bomber, during the crash. "Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and colleagues past and present," the American Airlines pilots union wrote on Twitter. The union's identification comes as Dallas County authorities work to identify and name the deceased. Both of the involved aircraft were from Houston.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the two aircraft — a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra — collided mid-air and crashed at 1:20 p.m. Saturday at the Commemorative Air Force Wings Over Dallas WWII Air Show at Dallas Executive Airport. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
The Commemorative Air Force Gulf Coast Wing identified the B-17 as"Texas Raiders," which is based in Conroe. It was the first Flying Fortress acquired solely for restoration and use as a flying museum, according to the group's website, and was one of only a handful still flying. The bomber had been housed in the greater Houston area since the early 1970s, at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base and David Wayne Hooks Airport in Spring, the Conroe Courier reported.
