Archaeologists in Israel have uncovered a 2,800-year-old ritual structure dating back to the Kingdom of Judah, providing insights into ancient worship practices near the First Temple.

Archaeologists in Israel have unearthed a series of stone rooms and objects dating back 2,800 years, likely used for worship and ritual practices in the Kingdom of Judah. This discovery represents the only known ritual structure from this period found in Jerusalem and one of a few unearthed in Israel . The ruins consist of eight rock-cut chambers, containing an oil press, a winepress, an altar, and a large standing stone known as a 'massebah' in the Hebrew Bible.

These artifacts originate from the First Temple period (1200 to 586 B.C.), suggesting ritual and cultic practices occurred near the First Temple, considered the first Jewish temple built by King Solomon for worshipping God according to Jewish tradition. It stood just a few hundred yards away on Jerusalem's Temple Mount. The structure was discovered on the eastern slope of the City of David, an archaeological site in East Jerusalem regarded as the ancient settlement core of the city. The northern part of the structure was initially known, having been unearthed in 1909 by British army officer Montagu Parker, but remained untouched for a century. When excavations at the City of David began in 2010, archaeologists found the site sealed with fill from the eighth century BCE, indicating disuse during that period. This could be attributed to religious reforms implemented by King Hezekiah of Judah, who aimed to eliminate ritual sites and concentrate religious worship at the First Temple, according to archaeologist Yossi Shukron. While the specific rituals performed in the newly unearthed structure remain unclear, evidence suggests the rooms were used for worship and associated cult practices, possibly involving animal sacrifice. Room 4, containing the stone 'massebah' and its surrounding platform, was undoubtedly used for worship, researchers believe. Room 5, adjacent to Room 4, likely served religious purposes and potentially as a site for sacrifice. It features three V-shaped grooves carved into the stone floor, along with other shapes engraved on the floor and walls. These grooves are unique and their purpose is ambiguous. Worshippers may have used them to crush grapes for wine and nuts for oil, or they could have held a tripod used for ritual practices. A nearby cave filled with objects from the eighth century BCE, including cooking pots, jars with ancient Hebrew inscriptions, scarabs, loom weights, grinding stones, and stamped seals, supports the interpretation of the site as a cultic complex. This complex offers profound evidence for the diversity of cultic practices in the capital of the Kingdom of Judah.
