A new report prepared by the World Health Organization said there are 2.6 million global deaths per year tied to alcohol consumption. The report says alcohol consumption led to 4.7% of all deaths, based on 2019 data.
The World Health Organization said 209 million people worldwide lived with alcohol dependency, representing about 2.7% of the total global population. The WHO found that 724,000 deaths were due to injuries, such as those from traffic crashes, self-harm and violence. Alcohol consumption was also tied to risky behavior that led to 284,000 deaths related to communicable diseases.
