2,000-year-old ‘most important’ Roman road unearthed in southeast London

A 2,000-year-old section of Watling Street, one of Britain’s most important Roman roads, has been uncovered beneath London’s Old Kent Road.

Built shortly after the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD, this ancient route originally connected the port of Dover in Kent to London and extended to the West Midlands.A portion of one of Britain’s most significant Roman roads has been uncovered in London . The 2,000-year-old road was found beneath the Old Kent Road in the city’s southeast area. The discovery was made by Southwark Council, as part of a dig conducted to expand the heating network in the vicinity.

Watling Street was built shortly after the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD. The latest find was identified as by archaeologists from thein 122 AD. Hadrian used it to reach the site where he ordered the construction of the famous Hadrian’s Wall, which separated England from Scotland. The uncovered section lies south of the Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road junction. Well-preserved, it measures about 19 feet wide and nearly 5 feet high.
