The Lost in Space movie is not the first version of the sci-fi franchise, as it came after the classic CBS series Lost in Space from the late 1960s. The show ran for three seasons, debuting on September 15, 1965, and ending its run on March 6, 1968. The Lost in Space TV show was nominated for two Emmy Awards. After an animated movie based on the show was released in 1972, the live-action Lost in Space movie was released in theaters on April 3, 1998. The sci-fi movie had a reported budget of $80 million, which means it needed to finish its box office run in the $160 million to $200 million range to break even. It did not, with Lost in Space's theatrical run amassing $136.2 million worldwide, which means it lost millions. Still, the film has become a cult classic over the years. In 2018, Netflix released a new Lost in Space TV show. The sci-fi series ran for three seasons, just like the original 1965 show, though the Netflix sci-fi series had smaller, 8 to 10-episode seasons.
