A cold case from 1988 has finally been solved after detectives were able to match DNA to a murder suspect over 36 years later.
On Aug. 28, 1988, fishermen found the body of 18-year-old Tracy Whitney who was nude right where the Puyallup and White Rivers meet. Those fishermen called 911 and Pierce County deputies responded.
The woman’s autopsy revealed her cause of death was asphyxia caused by strangulation and probable smothering. She had several blunt-force injuries and was believed to have been sexually assaulted. Her death was ruled a homicide and police took DNA swabs from her body. Pierce County detectives interviewed everyone who knew or had dated Tracy to try and find the killer, but the case went cold for years.17 years later, in 2022, the Cold Case Detective Sergeant submitted the DNA to a lab for Genetic Genealogy with the help of a grant offered by the WA State Attorney General’s Office. They found a match: John Guillot Jr.
Guillot Jr. died a few weeks before his DNA was matched, so Detectives used Guillo’s biological son to confirm his was the suspect. Authorities said there were no connections between Tracy and Guillot Jr. Detectives said believe this was a stranger abduction, rape, and murder.
